Visit Hever Castle’s history event and immerse yourself in different periods in history with encampments, re-enactments and stalls as well as more thrills and spills as our brave knights compete in this year’s Jousting Tournament over the bank holiday weekend.
Journey through History will take you from the age of the Romans, through to the Saxons, via the Viking invasion, right up to Edwardian times when William Waldorf Astor used this fortune to restore and extend the castle.
In the grounds you will be able to wander through the encampment to watch the Vikings and the Saxons go head to head with weapons displays and see men at arms skirmishes. You will also be able to experience medieval life with demonstrations of armour, medicine, cooking and weaving.
Next, step into the Tudor period and immerse yourself in the time when Hever Castle was Anne Boleyn’s childhood home. There will also be the opportunity to watch archery displays from the time of the Vikings through to the Tudors.
Be entertained with music from the reign of Elizabeth I and learn how to dance Elizabethan style. Experience the Golden Age of Piracy and gain an insight into the Georgian period with conversations relevant to 1769, songs from the period and silk patchwork on display.
Learn what it would have been like during the Edwardian period and then into World War I when the Astor family transformed marshland into the spectacular gardens you see today. Read about the history in the Castle and meet characters from the era in the grounds.
jousting is taking place on the following weekends:
July: 13 & 14; 20 & 21; 27 & 28
August: 10 & 11, 17 & 18; 23 – 26
